Wednesday, July 06, 2011

The orientation of SEO China 2011 began today after all attendees from Beijing and Shanghai arrived at Gobi Shanghai Office.

After a brief introduction of this program by Nancy, attendees were assigned with two Gobi cases from Harvard Business School and a presentation expected to be given the day after on SEO promotion.

In the afternoon, we had two speeches from Mr. Thomas G. Tsao, the co-founder and partner of Gobi Partners, and Perry Chui, a Senior Principal of Steamboat Ventures. Tom told us how to succeed, what is the supposed attitude for an intern, how to set your career path and other experience from the real business world. He emphasized attitude, hard work and commitment to give back. He said we are the generation to bring a new China. Perry shared his experience from an engineer student to an investor and gave us a lot of suggestions.

At German Center, we had a table manners training which is crucial as part of business etiquette. After that was a dinner with some Gobi staff and alumnus of SEO. During the dinner, we not only practice the table manners we were taught but learnt a lot from free talks with each other as well.

However, the dinner was not the end of the first day of orientation. All attendees went back to Gobi Office after that, and real work was started…

The second day of orientation witnessed a deeper discussion and thoughts communication among all attendees and former alumnus.

The morning was occupied with heated discussion about the cases handed out the day before about Gobi. We made the case study a team work so that they were done efficiently. We not only got our case study ability promoted but got a general idea about VC, Gobi, digital media market in China and so on as well.

In the afternoon, we had three sharings given by former alumnus. First was addressed by Charles Huang from Morgan Stanley, SEO 10’, providing us an overview of Investment Banking. Then, Marko Ma from China Grand Automotive Services, SEO 06’, introduced consulting life to us based on his personal experience. Following the career advice from the alumnus above was a life planning speech given by Steve Hu, SEO 07’. From career path choice suggestions to life decisions facing dilemmas, we got an even closer view of the real business world and new understandings of our lives.

After all speeches, we went back to our project to promote SEO for the future. SEO is not only about a long time connection among attendees but also an opportunity to more promising young people in China and closer relationship with sponsors of the real business world.
